Scholarly View on Montessori Nursery and Primary School Effectiveness in Nigeria

Nursery and primary education is a weapon for acquiring skills, relevant knowledge and habit for surviving in the changing world. For any stage in education to achieve its milestones, there must be level of school effectiveness. This effectiveness relates to one of the efforts made by school to achieve what it was really created for, and make changes toward student level of achievement. To achieve this effectiveness, there is a new innovation called Montessori education where there must be a match between the child's natural interests and the available activities to help children learn through their own experience and at their own pace to achieve the nursery and primary milestones. While in Nigeria, there seem to be numbers of Montessori schools even though very few of these Montessori schools understand what the approach or method is really all about. This paper adopts a systematic approach to assess the availability and adoption of Montessori Method of education in contemporary nursery and primary schools in Nigeria and how it relates school effectiveness. The paper compares both the conventional ways of teaching and Montessori methods of education which shows that unlike the conventional method that believes in grading systems putting unnecessarily pressure on the children while the Montessori method considers helping the child not just mentally but also physically and emotionally with freedom of movement and choice at their own pace for effective learning. The associated benefits and challenges of Montessori education were also identified, while it also suggests the way forward. The Social Cognitive Theory and the Diffusion of Innovation Theory were used to underpin the study.

Picking Waste, Discarding Health? Awotan Waste Pick Effect of Interactive Materials' Intervention on Senior Secondary School Students' Academic Achievement in Set Theory in Oyo South Senatorial District, Oyo State

Urban waste picking is assuming more visibility in the Nigerian informal economy with its waste to wealth potential. Agrowing body of literature identifies this activity as a viable source of income which leaves pickers vulnerable to health hazards inspite of little formal recognition by the state. Although persistent forays into this as a livelihood activity continues, more research is needed to properly understand the social dimensions of this issue. The study examined waste pickers risk perceptions, safety practices and public attitudes at work at Awotan landfill in Ibadan. Primary data was collected through questionnaires administered to 81 active pickers on site. Data was analyzed using inferential statistics. Results indicate that most pickers had at least a primary school level of education. There were twice as more males than females. More than 70% indicated the most prevalent health problem encountered at work were serious punctures and injuries from sharp objects followed by diarrhoeal and typhoid infections. 88% felt that their work type impacted on their health in hazardous ways such as snake bites and stings, falls and slips and held strong perceptions about the work-health implications for illnesses. Hospital waste was the most feared due to its association with probable blood infections from used needles, blood/body waste. Public attitudes to pickers while working was often negative. There is a very high risk of exposure to pathogens at work and study results may inform health policy on direct points of intervention for workers amidst continued interaction with waste

Language and Stylistic Use of Language in the Yoruba Cultural African Society in Sustainable Development

Language itself is dynamic and can function diachronically or synchronically. In actual fact, language as a means of communication in every society is indispensable in virtually all ramifications. The use of language is hereby peculiar to each linguistic community without ruling out various non-linguistic means of communication. Each community has its cultural peculiarities. Each of the languages has varieties. Each of the varieties in turn still has stylistic variants, which is the main theme of this study. However, our study reveals that the Yoruba language spoken within and outside the continent of Africa has quite a number of stylistic variants which bring about a semantic and pragmatic change in meaning in the socio-cultural world of the Yorubas in language sustainability based on sustainable development.

Promoting Interfaith Relations in a Multi-Religious Society for Sustainable Development

Religion according to many religious scholars has a powerful influence on every aspect of society. Professor J. K. Ayantayo (2023) who also discussed the potent influence of religion in his book, Sociological of Religion in African Concept, remarked that religion has an impact on a person, a group of people, and a nation. This position is apparent in a multi-religious society like Nigeria. People are conscious of their religious practices and sentimental about them so much that it often influences their behaviours. The arguments over beliefs and religious superiority have repeatedly brought the disruption of societal peace and destruction of lives and properties. Although there have been efforts on the part of government and religious stakeholders to promote peace, the challenge of religious intolerance and religious differentiation in every aspect of the nation is a cancer worm that has been a recurrent decimal within our society. As a developing country with a high rate of poverty, some religious extremists have adopted dysfunctional roles to wage wars against their probable religious opponents without just cause. Interfaith dialogue among religious functionaries and their followers will enhance sustainable development particularly when there is a continuing effort on their part to respect all religions and their beliefs regardless of their convictions. Against this backdrop, this paper tends to discuss the need to promote interfaith relations for sustainable development using observation, qualitative and descriptive methodologies

Food Security and Sustainable Agricultural Development in Nigeria Through Healthy and Environmental Best Practices of Farmers

This paper discussed sustainable food security in Nigeria through farmers' involvement in healthy and environmental best practices. Farmers' health directly correlates with productivity which results in food sufficiency and security. Engaging in healthy and environmental best practices improves health and supports farmers to stay healthy, enhances their attendance as well as productivity at work. This paper noted that one of the factors that cause unproductivity at work is ill-health; ill-health can result in presenteeism (workers who are physically present at work but not performing at their best); and absenteeism (workers not being present at work at all). The paper further argued that farmers' ill-health if not properly managed can result to food insecurity. To avert the incidence of food insecurity, farmers need to produce sufficient food and affordable for use by the people. The paper reasoned that sustainability can be enhanced by healthy and environmental practices of farmers in the course of food production. These practices are activities and lifestyles that can reduce ill-health and improve health of farmers; and activities that can reduce negative effects of agriculture on the environment. Due to farmers' poor personal health profiles, and ignorance to seek proper medical attention when the need arises, the paper concluded that that there is need to bring health literacy and environmental hygiene to the door steps of farmers; and advocated for health education through physical, environmental, reproductive as well as sexual health. The paper also suggested alternating bio-fertilizers and pesticides with chemical-fertilizer and pesticides to avoid over-use of chemicals on the farm. And also crop rotation, organic farming, conservative agriculture to alternate the highly chemicalized system of agriculture in practice at the moment.

This article examined the impact of land tenure regularization of Oyo State government on formal land transactions and beneficiaries level of investment during the period 2017-2022. Both primary and secondary data were explored for the study. Primary data were sourced from the beneficiaries of the policy. Secondary data were sourced from lands registry Oyo state ministry of Lands Housing and Urban Development's file, records and publications. In-Depth Interview were held with land registrar with the aid of questionnaire and information such as number of land transactions registered during the period 2017-2022 and transactions registered five years before tenure regularization policy intervention (2012-2016) were also sourced for the purpose of comparative analysis. Also, Focus Group Discussions and mobile data collection methods were used to collect information on demographic characteristics, their perceptions, tenure security and type of investment embarked upon after regularization, sources of funds and security for the fund sourced from financial institutions. One thousand beneficiaries were interviewed. However, 800 copies of questionnaire forms were retrieved for final analysis. The primary data were analyzed using the descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage tables. The formulated hypothesis was analyzed using Students' T-test statistics. The result showed that out of 800 respondents, the majority applied for loan 96% of the beneficiaries applied for loans from various financial institutions and 41% of the respondent invested on residential building, 17.5% on large scale agriculture and 8.9% on commercial. The collateral for the loan granted was the regularized titled documents. The findings also showed that there is significant difference in formal transaction registered in 2012-2016 and 2017-2022. The calculated t-value was 3.800 and critical tvalue was 1.900. Since the calculated t-value is greater than critical t-value (t-cal>t-critical) and p-value 0.04 is less than the level of significance 0.05, we reject the null hypothesis and accept the alternative hypothesis which state that there is statistical significant difference in land transaction registered between the two periods. Comparison of transaction between the periods shows that activities on formal transactions have increased by 133%. Hence, we can infer that to improve land transaction and investment, there will be need to improve the efficiency of land tenure regularization method.

Change in Value System: Undermining Academic Integrity and Innovative Research

Innovative research is an extension of quality education through academic integrity, and academic integrity is a product of societal value systems. In this study, academic integrity is examined, as it relates to global society. The value system of society is the key factor in building academic integrity, which will, in the long run, affect the quality of education for sustainable development. The question is, to what extent society affects academic integrity? This study applies the Virtue Theory of Ethics in a qualitative methodology of an evaluation research design, using a thematic analysis instrument to answer the question. In any society, certain things are compromised once the value system changes. To imbibe the culture of academic integrity, societal values must promote a system for such to thrive. If not, everyone wants things for the wrong reasons. This leads to a dearth of ability to perform, even innovative research. Then, all the values of academic integrity become scarce commodities, and it becomes difficult to cope with the required values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage whether as students, teachers, researchers, workers, or leaders; this affects the quality of education for innovative research and sustainable development. To imbibe the culture of academic integrity in everyone, societal values must change from just having a certificate to having the ability to perform duties innovatively as demanded by whatever the work requires.
