An assessment of the Impact of Parental Care Deprivation on In-school Adolescents Behavioural Problems in Ilorin Metropolis

Abstract

Summary

Parenting plays very crucial roles in adolescents “transition to adulthood”.It has been recognized as a major vehicle in socializing the child. Thisstudy therefore, examined the impact of parental care deprivation onin-school adolescents’ behaviour problems. The study also investigatedwhether variables such as gender and years of working experience,would influence respondents views. The research method adopted forthis study was descriptive survey. The population of the study consistedof all secondary teachers in Ilorin metropolis. An instrument titled “Impactof Parental Care Deprivation on In-School Adolescents’ BehaviourProblem Questionnaire (IPDIABPQ) was used to obtain data from 300randomly selected respondents. Percentages, mean and rank orderanalysis were employed to analyse the demographic data and to answer 
the main research question while t-test and (ANOVA) was used to testthe research hypotheses at 5% level of significance. The study revealedthat impact of parental care deprivation on in-school adolescents include:development of inferiority complex; tendencies for rebellion, disciplineproblems in schools; over-dependence on others and poor academicachievement among others. The study further revealed that gender andyears of working experience significantly influenced the perception ofrespondents on the impact of parental care on in school adolescentbehaviour problems. Based on the findings of this study, it isrecommended that parents should be assisted to learn how to giveappropiate care and support to their children in the areas of cognitive,physical, social, emotional and intellectual development so that thechildren can develop good and acceptable behaviour in the school, homeand society at large, Parents should be encouraged to spend more timewith their children so that they can easily discover the type of behaviourtheir children exhibit.
