Comparative Analysis of Social Studies Academic Achievement of Private and Public Junior Secondary Schools’ Students in Ibadan North Local Goverment Area of Oyo State, Nigeria
Summary
Academic performance which is the outcome of teaching-learning processcould be influenced by many factors including school ownership. This studycomparatively analyzed Social Studies students’ academic performance inprivate and public secondary schools in Ibadan-North, Oyo State (2007-2011). A descriptive survey design using pro-forma on Junior Secondary SchoolSocial Studies results from 2007 to 2011 was adopted for the study. Asample of three thousand two hundred and forty-four (3,244) studentswas selected from both Public and Private Junior secondary schools in IbadanNorth Local Government through simple random sampling technique. Threeresearch hypotheses were set for the study. It was found that there was asignificant difference in the performances of private and public schoolstudents (3.88> 1.96),there was significant difference in the performanceof male and female students (0.29 <1.96) and there was significantdifference in the performances of male and female students in public Juniorschools (0.09 < 1.96). It was therefore recommended that all JuniorSecondary School teachers should see results of their students inexaminations as challenges and try to improve on that especially on SocialStudies. Comparison of students’ results should be encouraged by school administrators and proprietors to ensure better academic performance infuture.
