Promoting Inclusive Mathematics Instruction through Logical Truth Tables and Coding in Integer Operations
Abstract
Integer operations form the foundation of mathematical learning. However, due to persistentmisconceptions of positive and negative numbers with respect to additive inverse, addition andsubtraction, multiplication and division and misinterpretation of inequalities symbols, students areconstrained in solving problems accurately and confidently. Traditional teaching strategy via rotememorizations fails to adequately address these challenges. This paper presents InclusiveMathematics Instruction through Logical Truth Tables and Coding in Integer Operations as aninnovative strategy. Widely used in logic and computing as a structured, visual framework foranalyzing all possible outcomes of mathematical operations, mapping positive and negativeintegers in tabular forms makes the underlying rules more transparent, reduces reliance onmemorization, and fosters inclusive learning for diverse students’ abilities. The paper concludedthat the use of truth tables and coding-based logic concepts in teaching integer operations promisesdual benefits as: bridging the gap between abstract logical reasoning and concrete mathematicalapplication; and provides an inclusive strategy (logic-based teaching strategy) that reduces relianceon rote memorization. It was suggested that the application of truth tables and logical codingsystems should be actively promoted and thoughtfully incorporated to strengthen the teaching andlearning of integer operations.
