Abstract

Abstract

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs are central to economic development in emergingeconomies, with agro-allied SMEs in Nigeria playing a critical role in food security, rurallivelihoods, and poverty reduction. However, beyond financial and operational constraints, thegrowth of these enterprises is increasingly shaped by cultural dynamics embedded in consumermarkets. This study examines the influence of culturally sensitive marketing practices on thegrowth of agro-allied SMEs in Oyo State, Nigeria. Adopting a quantitative survey design, datawere collected from 367 SME owners and managers using structured questionnaires andanalysed through correlation and regression techniques. The findings reveal that culturallysensitive marketing practices significantly predict business growth, explaining 41.4% of thevariance (R² = 0.414), with a positive effect (β = 0.359, p < 0.001). Cultural sensitivity alsoexhibits a strong and significant relationship with customer loyalty (r = 0.676, p < 0.01). Furtherregression analysis indicates that culturally sensitive marketing strategies account for 45.9% ofthe variance in sales performance and market expansion (R² = 0.459; β = 0.421, p < 0.001).Unlike much of the existing SME marketing literature that treats culture as a peripheral, thisstudy provides subnational empirical evidence that culturally embedded marketing practicesfunction as a measurable growth driver in a culturally diverse Nigerian context. The studyconcludes that cultural sensitivity represents a strategic capability rather than a complementarypractice for agro-allied SMEs. The findings provide insights for marketing training, policyformulation, and entrepreneurship development programmes aimed at enhancingcompetitiveness and sustainable growth.
