Abstract

Abstract

The study discussed the contributions of traditional Yoruba knowledgesystems and communication mechanisms to sustainable developmentwhile also investigating the challenges the systems and the mechanismsface in a rapidly changing world. The study uncovered the rich tapestryof indigenous knowledge, from farming practices and herbal remedies toproverbs and folktales that have long sustained Yoruba communitiesthrough interviews, focus groups, and site visits. However, the findingsalso revealed the threats posed by modernization and globalization, which have disrupted the transmission of these traditional practices andundermined their value in modern society. Ultimately, this study offereda critical examination of the challenges and opportunities facingIndigenous Yoruba knowledge systems and communication mechanismsin pursuing sustainable development. By drawing attention to theseissues, the study aimed to inspire new thinking and action that couldprotect and promote these invaluable cultural resources. As the studydelved deeper into the complexities of Yoruba knowledge systems, itbecame clear that these systems were not static, but rather dynamic andadaptable, able to evolve in response to changing environmental andsocial conditions. From the rich symbolism of Yoruba proverbs to the epictales of the Yoruba gods, these stories were shown to be not only a meansof entertainment but also a powerful tool for teaching and preservingculture. The study provides valuable insights and recommendations forpolicymakers, community leaders, and educators, and invites furtherexploration into the complex relationship between indigenousknowledge, communication, and sustainable development.
