Investigating the Durability Properties of Concrete Containing Crushed Glass and Shredded Tyre

Concrete is a durable construction materials which is widely used in constructionand civil engineering works. Most countries around the world already device ways ofrecycling wastes products to replace and conserve natural resources used inproducing concrete. This paper provides the performance of glass rubber concretesubjected to abrasion resistance and chemical resistance. The durability of concretewas assessed effectively by determining its abrasion resistance and chemicalresistance. Cement, water, fine sand, gravel, crushed glass of 4.75mm and shreddedtyre of 19mm were used as partial replacement in the composition of mix ratio of1:2:4 with 0.50 water/cement ratio. 0% was the control and partial replacementwas 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% by volume before using the aggregates to producegrade 25 concrete in (100x100x100) mm cube mould and was cured for 28 days.Physical and chemical properties, slump test, abrasion resistance and chemicalresistance tests were carried out. Results show that slump decreases with increasein crushed glass and shredded tyre. 5% partial replacement has good abrasionresistance after 28 days of curing and 5% partial replacement produced highresistance to chemical resistance with 26.69 N/mm2. Therefore, glass rubcreteshows potential for becoming an additional sustainable solution for waste recycling
