Abstract

The study appraised the impact of population dynamics on economic performance in Nigeria within the period 1980-2018. Economic performance measured by real output growth was regressed on three indicators of population dynamics which include birth rate, death rate, and net migration. Using the autoregressive distributed lag approach, the results revealed mixed relationship between population dynamics and economic performance in Nigeria. Exclusively, the findings showed that death rate and net migration influenced economic performance negatively, while birth rate has a direct impact on economic growth. The study suggests the need
to regularize the unbridled influx of foreigners into the country in order to reduce pressure on Nigeria’s available output. Also, measures should be taken to check the crude death rate of Nigeria as it affects economic growth negatively.
