Abstract

The disparity between the majority and minority groupings is a reality of all human societies or states. The digital media space has largely democratised the way and speed of communication, narrowing the gap between the majorities and the minorities. This survey study found that minorities, indeed, could have a say. The study objective was to determine how much digital media has amplified minority voices in Nigeria. Notwithstanding, the primary data was collected through the probabilistic survey with a questionnaire administered both online and physically. Data analysis concluded that digital media has extended communication access to minority groups. The Muted group and co-cultural theories that provided the theoretical framework for this study equally established the existence of minority groups who would always want to seek a medium of communication they found sympathetic orĀ
favourable to their course. In conclusion, study findings indicate a challenge in the skill level for minorities to take maximum benefit from the opportunities afforded them by the digital media space. The study recommends that the government and those in authority deliberately provide digital infrastructures, training, and a conducive environment to empower minority groups to seamlessly participate in cyberspace, which is a right, not a privilege.
