Video Games as Strategies for Effective Teaching and Learning Processes in Primary Schools, Ogun State, Nigeria

Video games can be viewed as an important tool for teaching complex
principles, educational video games promote pupils engagement and
enhance the learning process while making it fun. It teaches a systematic
way of thinking as well as an understanding for how different variables
affect each other. It also enhances reaction-based skills by providing the element of the unknown, which make the pupils react naturally. The
study was carried out to identify the video games are strategies needed
for effective teaching and learning process in primary schools in Nigeria.
To achieve these objectives, two research questions were formulated
and answered. A 24-item structured questionnaire was developed by
the researcher. Survey research design was used in collecting data. The
population consisted of 17 teachers from 17 primary schools in Abeokuta
Metropolis of Ogun State, Nigeria. The questionnaire was face validated
by 3 knowledgeable experts in Computer Science department from
Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. An internal
consistency coefficient of 0.80 was obtained. The questionnaire was
administered to all the teachers and the distributed copies were retrieved
and analyzed. Mean and standard deviations were used in data analysis.
The findings of the study showed that 22 video strategies would be
needed for effective teaching and learning process in primary schools in
Abeokuta Metropolis of Ogun State, Nigeria. The standard deviation of
the items were low, indicating that the variability of the responses from
the teachers were low. It was therefore, recommended that, primary
schools teachers in Abeokuta township, Ogun State, Nigeria should adopt
video games as strategies for effective teaching and learning process.
