Teaching Aids as a Determinants of Academic Performance of Pupils in Oluyole Local Government Area, Oyo State

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of teaching aids on academic performance
of the pupils in some primary schools in Oluyole Local Government of Oyo State. The study
examined relationship between teaching aids and performance of pupils in the schools. The
study employed qualitative and quantitative approaches. Three research questionnaire and
two null hypotheses guided the study. The hypotheses were raised to guide the study and
tested to ascertain the effects of teaching on academic performance of the pupils. The
research instruments used for assessment of the students’ performance were interviews of
social study teachers, observations of students in classrooms and questionnaire. To ensure
content, validity of research instrument, the questionnaire items were subjected to validation.
Descriptive and inferential statistics such as simple percentages, frequency counts and
regression analysis were used to analyse the data collected during the research project. The
study findings showed that teaching aids contribute a lot to students’ academic performance
in public primary schools in Oluyole Local Government Area. In fact, teaching aids is an
important determinant of academic performance of school pupils in a school setting.
The researcher recommended that the Ministry of Education (SUBEB) and other stake
holders should get the teachers the different types of teaching and learning aids for effective
teaching and making learning permanent and interesting.
