The ability of the secondary school system to achieve its goal depends
on the number, skills and performance of its teachers. As a result, this
study looked at theimpact of staff training and development
programmes on secondary school teachers’ job performance in Oyo.
The design adopted was the descriptive survey design of the Ex-post
facto. The population of the study comprised of all secondary schools
in Oyo metropolis. A Purposive sampling technique was used to select
10 schools from the three Local Governments in Oyo metropolis. A
Simple random sampling technique was also used to select 20
teachers each from the 10 sampled schools making a total of 200
teachers that served as total respondents. Data collected through selfdesigned teachers’ questionnaire were analyzed using simple
percentages, mean and independent t-test statistics. The hypotheses
were tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The results from the
analysis showed that there is a significant difference in the
performance of teachers who participated in staff training and
development program and those who did not (p-value 0.000 is less
than alpha value 0.05) but there is no significant difference in the
level of participation of public and private schools’ teachers in training
and development programme (P-value 0.104) is higher than alpha
value 0.05). It is concluded that training and development
programmes have a tremendous effect on the job performance of
secondary school teachers in Oyo metropolis. Participation in seminars
assist teachers to discuss their experiences on the job with other
colleagues and this improves their knowledge and job performance.
Based on the findings and conclusion, it is therefore recommended
that teachers should be encouraged by the school administrators to
attend workshops and seminars in their subjects frequently. They
should be encouraged to change their negative attitude towards
training and development programme to improve their job
performance. Government should give adequate financial provision for
teachers’ training and development programme.
