Abstract

The study investigated teacher training programmes as predictors of teacher
job satisfaction and performance in Oyo State, Nigeria. Teacher training
programmes examined include: regular courses, workshops, seminars and
academic conferences. Descriptive survey research was used. The population
comprised all public secondary school teachers in Oyo State. Cluster,
purposive and simple random sampling techniques were employed to select a
total of 1,800 teachers on whom questionnaire was administered, while 1,500
copies of the questionnaire distributed were retrieved and found suitable for
analysis. The research instrument used for data collection was Teacher Job
Satisfaction and Performance (TJSP). Three research questions and six
hypotheses were answered. Data collected were analysed using descriptive
statistics for the research questions while MANOVA, Multiple Regression
Analysis (ANOVA) and t- test were used for the hypotheses. The result
revealed that the level of teacher job satisfaction was lower than the level of
teacher job performance with the overall weighted average of 2.380 and
2.702 respectively. Also, there was a significant combined influence of teacher
training programmes on teacher job satisfaction and performance. The study
concluded that teachers in Oyo State rarely participated in teacher training
programmes, especially in-service training. On the basis of the findings of the
study, it is recommended that in-service-training for teachers should be given
priority by the Secondary School Management Board. Also, government should make adequate provisions for teacher training programmes in its budget, while
proper follow-up and feedback should be provided.
