Abstract

Nigeria since independence in 1960 has played a leading role on various issues pertaining to her continent, with Africa
being the main thrust of her foreign policy. She attained a golden era in her foreign policy in the 1970s due to oil boom
and economic prosperity, and also because past military regimes were assertive and nationalistic. However, dwindling
economic fortunes, political instability, poor governance and the rest has led to a decline. The dawn of the 21st century
which also coincided with return of democracy has orchestrated an agitation for renaissance in Nigeria’s foreign policy
and clamour for a paradigm shift
